TRUCK TIRE PLANT
< back to contents
(Nashville, Tenn., 12-14-04) Bridgestone Firestone North American Tire, LLC (BFNT) hosted two specialists from the Environmental Protection Agency during a recent tour of the company’s truck tire plant in Warren County, Tennessee. The event was part of Bridgestone Firestone’s partnership in the EPA SmartWay Transport program, a new long-term initiative to reduce emissions and increase trucking industry fuel efficiency.

The visit proved a valuable opportunity for EPA officials to learn first-hand about the engineering, innovation and complexity of the modern truck tire.

Visiting the Warren plant were Anthony Erb, environmental scientist from the Office of Transportation & Air Quality and Cheryl Bynum, policy analyst from the Office of Transportation & Air Quality. Both work on EPA’s SmartWay Transport Partnership program.

The tour was led by Greer Tidwell, director, environmental management for BFNT, Guy Walenga, engineering manager, North American Commercial Products, and Sean Fisher, senior environmental engineer for the Warren plant.

“The EPA is currently focusing on vehicle component performance as a way to improve air quality and fuel economy in transportation,” stated Tidwell. “The agency is exploring the effect tire performance has on fuel consumption and tailpipe emissions in the trucking industry, and we are pleased to share our knowledge with the EPA in this important effort.

“Bridgestone Firestone has a strong, established relationship with the EPA,” said Tidwell. “For example, five of Bridgestone Firestone’s seven plants are members of the EPA’s National Environment Performance Track for environmental leadership and our success in establishing wildlife habitats at our sites has earned EPA commendations.

“The company is committed to doing more in our communities than just meeting EPA environmental compliance standards, and we’re ready, willing and able to work with the agency on their new initiative,” concluded Tidwell.

Nashville-based Bridgestone Firestone North American Tire, LLC (BFNT) is a subsidiary of Bridgestone Americas Holding, Inc., whose parent company, Bridgestone Corporation, is the world’s largest tire and rubber company. BFNT develops, manufactures and markets Bridgestone, Firestone, Dayton and associate and private brand tires. The company is focused on wholesale and original equipment markets, supplying passenger, light truck, commercial vehicle, off-road, motorcycle, agricultural and other tires to its customers in North America.
