Lance Lowther has been an artist all his life. When he was just two, his mother, herself an artist, discovered him drawing a picture of a car – in his high chair.
Early on, he began painting pictures of trains. Later, as a sign painter, Lance put logos, pin-striping and lettering on tractors and trailers.
One day, a client who had seen some of his train paintings asked Lance if he could do a portrait of one of his trucks. Since then, Lowther has done more than 60 truck paintings, a few of which we present here.

In 1997, Lance Lowther was caught in a blizzard while driving through Wyoming.

For three days, with his wife, Esther, and over 2,000 truckers, Lowther waited for the storm to subside.
“We saw truckers trying to get heaters to keep loads of eggs from freezing and watched them unload cattle to exercise, feed and water them.

“It helped us appreciate what those who drive trucks do each and every day so that we have the necessities of life.”

Lowther still accepts commissions to paint trucks. His specialty is incorporating portraits of owners and family members into his truck paintings, blending history with art.

Reproductions of Lowther’s paintings are available on commemorative plates, greeting cards and even on laser-cut, 3-D refrigerator magnets.

In 1998, the Ontario Trucking Association used 18 of Lowther’s truck paintings to illustrate a calendar commemorating the 100th anniversary of trucking in Canada.
