STRANGE THINGS
What happens when a tire blows"?

One of the most popular Texas Proving Grounds demonstrations involves deliberately “blowing” a steer tire at 60 miles per hour.

The test truck drives over a large, v-shaped blade, slashing the tread instantly. The objective is to show seminar attendees that even after a “blowout,” vehicles can still be brought to a safe and controlled stop.

This time, Real Answers photographers captured the action on film. Notice how, immediately after the puncture, the tire is completely off the pavement. You can tell because you can see “air” under the tire and the tire’s shape is perfectly circular.

You can also see the punctured spot, near “3 o’clock,” with air and dust spewing out. And bear in mind that the camera has “frozen” the action. The truck was going 60 mph in all these pictures.

A fraction of a second later, you can see the tire “flat” against the pavement. And, a few seconds after that, the driver did bring the vehicle to a safe, controlled stop. Mission accomplished
