OVERVIEW BY   Singh Ahluwalia

Not me. Whenever I hear that cliche, I am reminded of a story. A young fellow with a brand-new degree in agricultural science got his first job with the county extension service.
Determined to change the world on his first day, he went to the farm nearest his office. He found the farmer in his field, and the young graduate began telling all the wonderful things he could do to improve his productivity and profits.
After about twenty minutes, the farmer stopped him and said, "Son, I already KNOW how to farm much better than I actually DO. What I need is to WANT to farm better."
And so it always is with knowledge. Worthless until we are motivated to put it into practice.
In this issue of Real Answers, we'll visit with Carco Carrier Corporation, and discover what they learned from customers and their own employees that they've used to improve their image and bottom line.
And, we'll look at what happened when Praxair, Inc. and J. F. Fick, Inc. decided to use the principles of quality guru W. Edwards Deming. They learned that continuously improving quality produces greater customer satisfaction, lower costs, improved morale - and best of all - higher profits.
We'll also visit a unique new fleet education school - in the desert of west Texas, and take a ride with a driver/trainer who knows how to squeeze every last mile from a gallon of diesel.
Finally, we'll explore some simple maintenance steps to reduce tire costs, and see how misfortune turned into good fortune - for the inventors of the towing and recovery business.
In each case, we'll see how knowledge becomes power - when that knowledge is applied. We hope you'll find some knowledge in this issue of Real Answers - that you too can turn into power.
