In
this issue of Real Answers, we look at some of the important
contributions women are making to this business.
For
Beth Franklin of Star Transportation, her place is behind the
CEO's desk, running a successful truckload
carrier, emphasizing fun and profit while preserving family
values and customer service.
Ofelia
San Pedro, of Ryder System, Inc., found her place mentoring
(and being mentored) within Ryder, while handling the awesome
responsibility of managing and acquiring billions of dollars
worth of fuel, equipment and tires every year.
Kathleen
Tschogl is managing environmental and regulatory affairs for
the Raley's and Ozark fleets as they try
out low emissions, natural gas-powered tractors in California
and Nevada.
For
Cheri Lowe and Mary Jane Olson, their place is behind the wheel
equal partners with their husbands as team drivers,
sharing lives and careers.
And
for Bette Garber, her place is behind the camera and at the
keyboard, using photographs and words to document this industry,
its people, the equipment and the road.
There
are still too few women in many parts of this business, but
we hope the stories of these trailblazers will encourage more
to join the industry and the industry to welcome them.
Along
with that, we'll also see how Howard Trucking has made maintenance
a key to its success, and how the R227 radial is performing
in the real world.
Finally,
we'll discover how wheel end uniformity can help produce uniform
wear, the importance of proper lug
nut torque, and a colorful and fun use for scrap tires.
We
hope you'll find a useful place for all this information, and
that you'll enjoy reading this issue of Real Answers.
